The initial stages of writing a book are a solitary experience, but taking it through all the publishing stages isn’t something done without a team.
I feel incredibly lucky to have a team helping me make my goals become reality and want to introduce two of them to you today in honor of International Women’s Day (March 8).
First up is my outstanding editor, Karen. There’s no question she makes me a better writer. She’s been an indispensable part of my team since 2018, coming on to help me edit The Murder Lawyer. Without her, that book wouldn’t be what it is today.
Yes, she sends me back my manuscripts littered with red marks. Yes, sometimes I push back on her critiques and suggestions, but at the end of the day, I know she’s right and I surrender. A book starts with an idea, but it’s the writer/editor relationship that makes it a story you want to read.
Now, let me introduce you to my patient and wonderful assistant, Claire. She’s the woman behind the scenes who keeps me organized, which is something I need so bad. One of the first things she did for me was set up a spreadsheet that had all my books’ information in one place. I mean, LIFE CHANGING! If you’re a member of Piper’s Peeps, my FB group, Claire’s the one who finds those fun questions and polls that get posted. If that job were up to me, I’d probably just post photos of books all day.
Teamwork makes the dream work, and without these two women, I couldn’t make this work!
