Often writers are asked how big of a role music plays in the creative process. It’s a question I am asked frequently when I’m presenting to a high school English class or speaking with a reader. The answer is, at least for me, that music plays a critical role in the development of my stories and its characters, but not in the way you may imagine.
Do I listen to music while I write?
Hardly ever. It’s too distracting, which means I end up wasting precious writing time. Jazz and classical music aren’t too disrupting, but mostly I write in silence. So it might surprise you that without music my stories wouldn’t be told in the way they are presented.
Let me explain.
I am a very visual person. When I write, I’m not just seeing a string of words in my head. Sometimes I don’t see words at all. I see scenes, flashes of action, and they always have a soundtrack. Sometimes I’ll hear a song and immediately create a scene in my head and write it later. Other times, a song will sneak up on me and I use the emotion of the song to make a scene better.
Starting with Missing Girl, all of the books and short stories I’ve written, have a secret playlist. Today, I’d like to share my playlist with you for 60 Days. Some of these songs/artists I discovered just in the past few days. So, you can see, my characters from 60 Days are never that far from my mind. I hope you’ll find a song that resonates with you and tells the stories of Lizzie, Emily, Yasiel, Manny, and Sophia in a powerful way.
