A few months ago, I sat down with a pen and paper and started writing a story that I simply titled, She. This story was about a woman who was lost and desperate to escape the monotony of her everyday, suburban life. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her children or adore her husband, she merely was questioning what else there was in life meant for her. She had created a small life in a tiny box, and she became her own prisoner.
After I had written this short story, I realized that I never named this woman, and I never described her physically. Why did I make this creative choice? Then it hit me like a bolt from the blue. I never named her because she could be anyone. She could be any woman out there who felt stuck in a situation, contemplating a life choice or just feeling vulnerable to her desires. That short story evolved into a series I call, SHE.
SHE is a series for every woman who visits this website. It is a series of short stories (usually less than 1000 words) that YOU may relate to. I hope that the stories that are part of this series will speak to you, and I hope that you will share these words with other women in your life.
The first story in the SHE series is titled, Choices. You can find it here. This story was inspired by an impromptu hike to a small lake near my home, although not in the area where the story takes place. I feel the need to say this because of any local readers that may be confused by a description of something that doesn’t exist.
The lake wasn’t the only inspiration for this story. As with most of my fiction, my stories are inspired by people’s stories I hear on the news or in real life. I then embellish and create a world of my own, releasing it to you to contemplate and to find your own meaning.
I hope you enjoy this first story in the SHE series and look forward to what the future of SHE holds. If you’re a writer (professional or you just like to dabble in the craft) and would like to contribute to the SHE series, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org for the submission process.
